Present Tenses – Simple Present Tense

Textual Material

Form:

  • Affirmative Form: verb/verb + (e)s
  • Negative Form: do/does not + verb
  • Question Form:do/does + … + verb?

Examples:

  • He plays tennis.
  • She doesn’t play tennis.
  • Do you play tennis?

The present simple tense is used:

  • To discuss regular habits or repeated actions:
    • Example: I get up early and practice every day.
  • To describe permanent situations:
    • Example: My parents own a restaurant.
  • For conveying facts or universally accepted truths:
    • Example: Students don’t generally have much money.
  • To provide instructions and directions:
    • Example: You go down to the traffic lights, then turn left.
  • In narratives related to films, books, and plays:
    • Example: In the film, the tea lady falls in love with the Prime Minister.
