Comparing Things

Textual Material
1. Comparing Adjectives:

Comparative adjectives are used to compare two or more things: “Younger runners will always be faster than older runners.” Meanwhile, superlative adjectives are used to compare one thing with all others in a group: “The Olympics is probably the most exciting sports event.”

  • One-syllable adjectives: Add -er for comparative and -est for superlative. Example: tall – taller – tallest.
  • Adjectives ending in -e: Add -r for comparative and -st for superlative. Example: nice – nicer – nicest.
  • One-syllable adjectives ending in a vowel + consonant: Double the final consonant and add -er for comparative, and double the final consonant and add -est for superlative. Example: big – bigger – biggest.
  • Irregular adjectives have unique comparative and superlative forms: good – better – best, bad – worse – worst, far – further/farther – furthest/farthest.
